Lutzomyia longipalpis: an update on this sand fly vector

چکیده
Lutzomyia longipalpis is the most important vector of Leishmania infantum, etiological agent visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in New World. It a permissive susceptible to infection with several species. One advantages that favors study this sand fly possibility colonization laboratory. For reason, researchers around world use species as model for different subjects including biology, insecticides testing, host-parasite interaction, physiology, genetics, proteomics, molecular and saliva among others. In 2003, we published our first review (Soares & Turco 2003) on covering aspects Lu. longipalpis. This current summarizes what has been between 2003-2020. During period, modern approaches were incorporated following development more advanced sensitive techniques assess fly.

A real-time PCR assay to estimate Leishmania chagasi load in its natural sand fly vector Lutzomyia longipalpis
Leishmania chagasi, transmitted mainly by Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies, causes visceral leishmaniasis and atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis in Latin America. Successful vector control depends upon determining vectorial capacity and understanding Leishmania transmission by sand flies. As microscopic detection of Leishmania in dissected sand fly guts is laborious and time-consuming, highly spe...
متن کاملSALO, a novel classical pathway complement inhibitor from saliva of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis
Blood-feeding insects inject potent salivary components including complement inhibitors into their host's skin to acquire a blood meal. Sand fly saliva was shown to inhibit the classical pathway of complement; however, the molecular identity of the inhibitor remains unknown. Here, we identified SALO as the classical pathway complement inhibitor. SALO, an 11 kDa protein, has no homology to prote...
متن کاملPhylogeography of the neotropical sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences.
Sand flies in the Lutzomyia longipalpis species complex include the primary vector of Leishmania chagasi, the etiologic agent of visceral leishmaniasis in the Neotropics. Twelve L. longipalpis populations from South and Central America were compared using the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene from the mitochondrial genome. The haplotype profiles for each population revealed that the majority of...
متن کاملBreeding structure of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) in Brazil.
Eleven populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), the sand fly vector of Leishmania chagasi, from different areas of Brazil were analyzed for genetic variation at 16 enzyme loci. In this region, the prevalence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by L. chagasi is spotty and reproductive isolation among populations of Lu. longipalpis has been reported. It is thought that morphological...
متن کاملStructure of SALO, a leishmaniasis vaccine candidate from the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis
BACKGROUND Immunity to the sand fly salivary protein SALO (Salivary Anticomplement of Lutzomyia longipalpis) protected hamsters against Leishmania infantum and L. braziliensis infection and, more recently, a vaccine combination of a genetically modified Leishmania with SALO conferred strong protection against L. donovani infection. Because of the importance of SALO as a potential component of a...
