Low-Temperature Performance of Polymer-Modified Binders in Stone Mastic Asphalts

When temperatures drop to significantly low levels, road pavements are subjected thermally-induced stresses, resulting in the appearance of thermal cracking, among other distresses. In these situations, polymers can be used as asphalt binder modifiers improve certain properties, such elastic recovery, cohesion, and ductility. Polymers also minimize some problems mixtures, fatigue cracking permanent deformation. This work’s objective was study behavior mixtures at temperatures, mainly when using modified binders. Thus, three binders were selected tested: a standard 50/70 penetration grade bitumen two polymer-modified (PMB), obtained by adding, respectively, 2.5% 5.0% styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) pen bitumen. Then, PMBs incorporated into stone mastic (namely SMA 11), which low-temperature mechanical tests based on most recent European Standards. The evaluated this work tested for resistance, creep, cohesive strength, ductility strength. Overall, it is concluded that studied with PMB, just SBS, performed adequately down ?20 °C.
