Low-level CAM photosynthesis in a succulent-leaved member of the Urticaceae, Pilea peperomioides

Pilea peperomioides Diels (Urticaceae) is a semi-succulent herbaceous species native to south-western China that has become popular in cultivation as an ornamental plant. To investigate whether this possesses the capacity for CAM photosynthesis, measurements were made of CO2 gas exchange and titratable acidity plants under both well-watered water-deficit conditions. Plants found assimilate almost exclusively light via C3 photosynthesis. However, distinct transient reductions rate net nocturnal release consistently observed during course dark period, conditions one plant exhibited brief period uptake, providing unequivocal evidence activity. Furthermore, increases leaf laminas petioles all exposed wet–dry–wet cycles. This first report family Urticaceae.
