Low humidity and hypersalinity reduce cold tolerance in mangroves

چکیده

Macroclimatic changes are expected to radically alter coastal wetland ecosystems in the coming century. The trajectory of response climate warming may differ based on other concomitantly changing abiotic variables such as soil salinity and relative humidity. Thus, understanding plant responses multiple interacting stressors is required accurately predict shifts under change. ongoing poleward shift mangrove range limits has been linked with a reduction freeze events, yet interactions between low temperature remain underexplored. We grew two common mangroves (Avicennia germinans Rhizophora mangle, n = 1222) from propagules for 10 months environmental growth chambers experimentally manipulated temperature, salinity, humidity treatments that reflected conditions these species experience field. measured variation physiological characteristics before, during, after exposure. For both species, resistance resilience stress were mediated by conditions. Chronic chilling at °C caused widespread seedling stem elongation rate, altered leaf gas exchange rates, increased mortality, particularly high Additional exposure an overnight (−4 °C) had relatively minor impacts. Five temperatures, some R. mangle exhibited capacity recover severe cold damage, but only optimal Although A. generally more resistant stress, severely damaged plants did not recover, even contend current future result including Consequently, modelling approaches predicting change need consider their interactions.

Evaluation of Cold Tolerance in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) Using Stress Tolerance Indices

In order to study the response of 120 genotypes of rapeseed (including 100 hybrids and 20 parents) in terms of cold stress tolerance, an experiment was conducted in α-lattice design with two replications under normal (September) and late sowing (October) conditions during two years. Combined analysis of variance showed that genotypes were significantly different at 1% and there was a significan...

Cold tolerance in Arabidopsis kamchatica.

UNLABELLED • PREMISE OF THE STUDY Cold tolerance is a critically important factor determining how plants will be influenced by climate change, including changes in snowcover and extreme weather events. Although a great deal is known about cold tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana, it is not highly cold tolerant. This study examined cold tolerance and its genetic diversity in an herbaceous subarc...

Cytosolic carbonic anhydrase in the Gulf toadfish is important for tolerance to hypersalinity.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a ubiquitous enzyme involved in acid-base regulation and osmoregulation. Many studies have demonstrated a role for this enzyme in fish osmoregulation in seawater as well as freshwater. However, to date CA responses of marine fish exposed to salinities exceeding seawater (approximately 35 ppt) have not been examined. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to ex...

Cold tolerance and silencing of three cold-tolerance genes of overwintering Chinese white pine larvae

The values of physiological indices and the enzymes activities involved in the overwintering stage were studied in D. armandi larvae in each month from October 2014 to March 2015. The sorbitol, trehalose and glycerol values initially tended to increase as the ambient temperature decreased, before declining until the end of the winter. The activities of four enzymes (SOD, CAT, LDH and AchE) decr...

Selection for Cold Tolerance and Low Temperature Germination in Sugar Beets

Germination in Sugar Beets R. R. WOOD Introduction The development of varieties of sugar beets capable of germination from seed at low temperatures, together with the ability to withstand frost after establishment of the plant in spring and resistance to early freezing damage in fall, now appears to be entirely possible. The apparent advantages of such types in temperate climaxes is fairly obvi...
