Low applicatives and affected applicatives in Turkish

چکیده
This paper argues that the dative beneficiary in Turkish has been incorrectly identified as a high applicative structure. While datives are felicitous with certain unergative and stative verbs, they show semantic restrictions unexpected on analysis. I argue instead two types: low (contra Tonyalı 2015a,b), relating applied argument to theme possessor, affected (Cuervo 2003), state of beneficiary. Neither these is event whole. correctly captures distribution non-core without overgenerating analysis does.

Extractions in Tsou causative applicatives
This paper investigates the extraction of an internal argument as the trigger in Tsou applicatives. It is observed that a locative applicative (LA) advances as the trigger an indirect object (IO), not a direct object (DO), whereas a(n) instrumental/benefactive applicative seems to advance either an IO or a DO. In this paper, I argue that the seemingly DO extraction in an IA is actually an IO ex...
متن کاملMorphological Templates, Headedness, and Applicatives in Barupu
The applicative construction in Barupu (Macro-Skou family from northern New Guinea) performs all the functions expected of an applicative: it is a valencyincreasing construction that adds an object to a verb, similar to the relationship between the intransitive ‘be afraid’ and the transitive ‘fear’ in English. The applicative object behaves the same as the base object of a transitive verb with ...
متن کاملOn the Status of Applicatives in Tsimshianic
This paper examines data which shows how the grammatical causative *kwinin the Tsimshianic languages may be used as a directional applicative. Additional morphology is often associated with *kwin-: there is suggestive evidence that the verbal suffix ‘T’ in Gitksan and Nisgha is the historical remnant of an applicative suffix. This analysis also collapses the two separate lexical entries for gwi...
متن کاملObject Asymmetries in a Phase Theory of Syntax
Pylkkänen (2001) argues that there are two types of applicatives, which have different lexical semantics. I will show that this difference underlies the contrast between (1) and (2), and argue that the two applicatives have different syntactic ‘phase’ structures (Chomsky 1999, 2000). Phases are chunks of syntactic structure that are sent off to PF and LF for interpretation before the derivation...
