Low-albedo asteroids: analogues with a high polarization at large phase angles

چکیده

ABSTRACT While remote observations of the linear polarization five low-albedo near-Earth asteroids are available at large phase angles, space missions have collected materials from surface two them and one is already back to Earth. The structure regolith on may be different that encountered larger objects, because their low gravity thermal stress cycling. Dust particles crushed meteorites (i.e. Orgueil Allende) tentatively used as analogues provide a better approach such regoliths. PROGRA2 experiment studies light-scattering properties dust various size distributions under Earth’s either deposited or with clouds lifted by an air-draught, well μ-gravity conditions. Similar maximum in Pmax) values obtained experimentally for dark levitation, showing multiple scattering negligible. increased sensitivity instruments, together imaging techniques, makes it possible study Pmax increasing sizes particles, up mm-sizes above. Our results confirm constituting mm-sized reach 50 per cent good agreement observations. Some also suggested present particles. Also, huge agglomerates made random ballistic deposition considered relevant e.g. pebbles boulders.

Constraining MODIS snow albedo at large solar zenith angles: Implications for surface energy budget in Greenland

An understanding of the surface albedo of high latitudes is crucial for climate change studies. MODIS albedo retrievals flagged as high quality compare well with in situ Greenland Climate Network (GC-Net) measurements but cover too little area to fully characterize Greenland's albedo in non-summer months. In contrast, poor quality MODIS retrievals provide adequate spatio-temporal coverage, but ...

The Albedo Distribution of near Earth Asteroids

The cryogenic Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission in 2010 was extremely sensitive to asteroids and not biased against detecting dark objects. The albedos of 428 near Earth asteroids (NEAs) observed by WISEduring its fully cryogenic mission can be fit quite well by a threeparameter function that is the sum of two Rayleigh distributions. The Rayleigh distribution is zero for nega...

A Study of Opposition Phase Curve in Low Albedo Media

Introduction: The Opposition Effect, the pronounced non-linear intensity increase in the reflectance phase curve with decreasing phase angle, θ, has long been observed in solar system bodies and in laboratory investigations of the angular scattering properties of particulate media[1]. The size and shape of the phase curve, and the change in linear polarization with θ, have been related to the p...

The Euphrosyne Family’s Contribution to the Low Albedo Near-earth Asteroids

The Euphrosyne asteroid family is uniquely situated at high inclination in the outer Main Belt, bisected by the 6 n secular resonance. This large, low albedo family may thus be an important contributor to specific subpopulations of the near-Earth objects. We present simulations of the orbital evolution of Euphrosyne family members from the time of breakup to the present day, focusing on those m...

A Novel Metamaterial Microelectromechanical Systems Phase Shifter with High Phase Shift and High Bandwidth

In this paper, new topology of phase shifter is proposed that uses advantage of metamaterial and MEMS technology. The phase shifter is switched between two states of RH- and LH-TL having frequency passband unlike other proposed metamaterials which create the maximum phase shift from one unitcell. Analysis and design approach of the phase shifter is presented and the structure is simulated using...
