Losing grip on the third realm: against naive realism for intuitions

چکیده
Abstract Naive realism in philosophy of perception is the view that (factive) involves a direct relation between perceiving subjects and world. The naive realist says your cat on mat worldly partially constituted by mat; spatio-temporal chunk world presenting itself to you. Recently, Elijah Chudnoff John Bengson have independently developed an extension this intellectual experiences, or intuitions, for traditionally priori domains. We argue view, which we call ‘intuitional realism’ (INR), will not epistemic advantages claim it does. In perception, but intuition, there deeper explanation what makes case one experience while another not. Whether INR true, then, does no interesting epistemological work

Naive Realism about Operators
A source of much difficulty and confusion in the interpretation of quantum mechanics is a “naive realism about operators.” By this we refer to various ways of taking too seriously the notion of operator-as-observable, and in particular to the all too casual talk about “measuring operators” that occurs when the subject is quantum mechanics. Without a specification of what should be meant by “mea...
متن کاملAgainst 'realism'
We examine the prevalent use of the phrase “local realism” in the context of Bell’s Theorem and associated experiments, with a focus on the question: what exactly is the “realism” in “local realism” supposed to mean? Carefully surveying several possible meanings, we argue that all of them are flawed in one way or another as attempts to point out a second premise (in addition to locality) on whi...
متن کاملAgainst Yagisawa’s Modal Realism
In his book Worlds and Individuals, Possible and Otherwise (2010), Takashi Yagisawa presents and argues for a novel and imaginative version of modal realism. It differs both from Lewis’s modal realism (Lewis 1986) and from actualists’ ersatz accounts (Adams 1974; Sider 2002). Yagisawa draws interesting parallels between tense and modality, and gives a metaphysics of modality which comes close t...
متن کاملTwo Arguments against Realism
Over the last 20 years or so, Hilary Putnam has developed a series of arguments which use basic theorems of model theory to undermine semantic realism. Here, I discuss two generalizations of these arguments. The first employs some new forms of model theory to generate substantially stronger conclusions than Putnam’s original arguments generated. The second illustrates a method for replacing the...
متن کاملThird time lucky? Getting a grip on matrix metalloproteinases.
Drug candidates against matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) failed in the clinic in the past because their strong zinc-targeting warheads led to a lack of specificity. More recently, significant selectivity among MMPs was achieved by blocking the enzymes' specificity pockets, nearby exosites, and downstream domains. Scannevin and colleagues now elegantly twist the plot and achieve ultimate selecti...
