Long-Term Oxbow Lake Trophic State under Agricultural Best Management Practices

نویسندگان

چکیده

A key principle of agricultural best management practices (BMPs) is to improve water quality by reducing agricultural-sourced nutrients and associated eutrophication. Long-term (1998–2016) lake summer trophic state index (TSI) trends an watershed with were assessed. Structural BMPs included vegetative buffers, conservation tillage, reserve, a constructed wetland, sediment retention pond. TSI Secchi visibility (SD), chlorophyll (Chl), total phosphorus (TP), nitrogen (TN). Summer 1977 was >80 in 1998–1999 (hypertrophic) decreased over the first 10 years ≈ 75 (eutrophic). decrease changing deviations coincided reserve. The TSI(SD) (>90 <70) buffers TSI(TP) <75) primarily tillage TSI(Chl) increase (<60 >70) buffer. Results indicate watershed-wide can modestly through increased transparency TP, but these changes are off-set increases reach new stable within decade. Future research should assess algal nutrient thresholds, internal loading, climate change effects.

Combined effects of best management practices on water quality in oxbow lakes from agricultural watersheds

Water quality conditions in three oxbow lakes were examined before and after best management practices (BMPs) implementation within the Mississippi Delta. Experimental design called for the development of structural and cultural treatments to reduce sediment and associated pollutants entering watershed oxbow lakes. Three watersheds were selected and developed with different levels of BMPs. Chan...

On optimal placement of best management practices in agricultural watersheds

This article presents analysis and synthesis of findings concerning the problem of costeffective placement of best management practices (BMPs) emerging from NIFA CEAP and the USDA NRCS jointly-funded competitive grant projects, and future research needs. The synthesis focuses on two fundamental aspects of the cost-effectiveness problem: (1) how to assess the locationand farmer-specific costs of...

Agricultural best management practices for water pollution control: current issues

From the first awareness of agricultural sources of water pollution in the US in the 1960s, we finally see in the 1990s a commitment at the national level for agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution control. This has been occasioned by a growing awareness that, with point sources of some pollutants largely controlled by waste-water treatment, greater attention must be paid to NPS pollutio...

Agricultural pesticides in Mississippi Delta oxbow lake sediments during autumn and their effects on Hyalella azteca.

Agricultural pesticide contamination of sediments from five Mississippi Delta oxbow lakes and their effects and bioavailablity to Hyalella azteca were assessed during a low-application season-autumn. Three reference oxbow lakes were located in the White River National Wildlife Refuge (WRNWR), Arkansas and two impaired lakes, according to the US Environmental Agency Sect. 303 (d) Clean Water Act...
