Long-term enrichment of anaerobic propionate-oxidizing consortia: Syntrophic culture development and growth optimization

چکیده

Propionate is a quantitatively important methanogenic intermediate in anaerobic digesters and only limited number of microbes can utilize it under syntrophic association with methanogens. The propionate oxidizing bacterias are known to be slow growers due the low energy yield. Thus, get accumulated frequently negatively affect digester performance. In this study, degrading consortia from four different seeding sources were enriched sequential bath mode two phases; first adaption phase 1 g/L concentration later, high-strength 3 g/L. From 16s rRNA gene based metagenomics analysis former phase, microbial groups, Syntrophaceae, Syntrophomonadaceae, Methanobacterium Methanosaeta found dominant complete degradation propionate. substrate accelerated shifts observed at significant decrease Syntrophaceae up 26.9 %. Using Response Surface Methodology, pH 6.8–6.9 temperature 34.5–34.9 °C optimum growth conditions for culture. Observed results could useful improve efficiencies obtained culture used recover propionate-accumulated by bio-augmentation.

Pelotomaculum propionicicum sp. nov., an anaerobic, mesophilic, obligately syntrophic, propionate-oxidizing bacterium.

An anaerobic, mesophilic, syntrophic, propionate-oxidizing bacterium, strain MGP(T), was isolated as a defined co-culture with Methanospirillum hungatei from the methanogenic sludge of a mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The strain grew in the presence of propionate, but only in co-culture with methanogens, suggesting that it is an obligately syntrophic bacterium. The o...

Growth of syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria with fumarate in the absence of methanogenic bacteria.

Oxidation of succinate to fumarate is an energetically difficult step in the biochemical pathway of propionate oxidation by syntrophic methanogenic cultures. Therefore, the effect of fumarate on propionate oxidation by two different propionate-oxidizing cultures was investigated. When the methanogens in a newly enriched propionate-oxidizing methanogenic culture were inhibited by bromoethanesulf...

Growth of geobacter sulfurreducens with acetate in syntrophic cooperation with hydrogen-oxidizing anaerobic partners

Pure cultures of Geobacter sulfurreducens and other Fe(III)-reducing bacteria accumulated hydrogen to partial pressures of 5 to 70 Pa with acetate, butyrate, benzoate, ethanol, lactate, or glucose as the electron donor if electron release to an acceptor was limiting. G. sulfurreducens coupled acetate oxidation with electron transfer to an anaerobic partner bacterium in the absence of ferric iro...

Ultrastructure and Viral Metagenome of Bacteriophages from an Anaerobic Methane Oxidizing Methylomirabilis Bioreactor Enrichment Culture

With its capacity for anaerobic methane oxidation and denitrification, the bacterium Methylomirabilis oxyfera plays an important role in natural ecosystems. Its unique physiology can be exploited for more sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. However, operational stability of full-scale bioreactors can experience setbacks due to, for example, bacteriophage blooms. By shaping microbial ...
