چکیده

Improved waste management at McMurdo Station, Antarctica beginning in the 1980s has been followed by decreases polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and metal contamination adjacent marine sediments. However, determining effect of decreased on ecological indicators (macrobenthic fauna) is confounded concurrent changes climate cycles other physical forces. Between 2000 2013, there was a decrease concentrations some contaminants including mercury, copper, organochlorines, PAHs sediments to Station. PAH Winter Quarters Bay an order magnitude from 2000/2003 2012/2013 were within reference area 2013. Macrobenthic communities did not indicate any sign recovery have become more similar over this same period time. Temporal macrobenthic community composition during study had higher correlations with climatic sea ice dynamics than contaminant concentrations. The Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation index highest correlation composition. Antarctic index, maximum extent natural environmental factors also appear influence Despite large improvements continuing vigilance necessary before noticeable improvement systems likely occur. effects must be considered when temporal anthropogenic Antarctica. Maintaining long-term monitoring both important for localized global influences humans Antarctica, which will implications whole planet.

Long-term experimental warming reduces soil nematode populations in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

Climate models predict significant future warming in polar regions. In the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, projected summer climate warming is expected to increase snow and glacial melt, resulting in higher stream discharge, rising lake levels, and an increase in areas of moist soil, but the potential influence of warming and associated changes in hydrology on the soil ecosystem is poorly unde...

Spatial patterns of total petroleum hydrocarbons in the terrestrial environment at McMurdo Station, Antarctica

Fossil fuels are used throughout the United States Antarctic Program. Accidental releases of petroleum hydrocarbons are the leading source of environmental contamination. Since 1999 McMurdo Station has been the site of the most extensive environmental monitoring programme in Antarctica. Nearly 2500 surface soil samples were collected from 1999–2007 to determine the spatial ‘‘footprint’’ of petr...

Diversity within cyanobacterial mat communities in variable salinity meltwater ponds of McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica.

This study investigated the diversity of cyanobacterial mat communities of three meltwater ponds--Fresh, Orange and Salt Ponds, south of Bratina Island, McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. A combined morphological and genetic approach using clone libraries was used to investigate the influence of salinity on cyanobacterial diversity within these ecosystems without prior cultivation or isolation of c...
