Lock-release gravity currents propagating over roughness elements

چکیده

Abstract The influence of bottom roughness on the development lock-release gravity currents is investigated through laboratory experiments using Particle Image Velocimetry. represented by arrays vertical LEGO bricks with a constant spacing while varying $$\lambda $$ ? , relative height elements to current depth. Depending may affect propagation: for small behaves like moving over smooth bottom, larger propagation speed reduced and internal structure current, including both head tail, significantly modified. As increases, stronger recirculation areas between develop interacting overlying layer giving rise small-scale vortical structures opposite sign within whole depth current. additional drag force induced adds significant complexity flow dynamics modifies characteristics

Lock-release inertial gravity currents over a thick porous layer

This paper examines the motion of a dense fluid that develops as an inertial gravity current of decreasing mass above a horizontal porous bed, while flow described by Darcy’s law occurs in the bed. Measurements of the mass and the front position of the current in a set of laboratory experiments performed by changing different parameters are presented. The results are explained by means of a glo...

Dynamics of lock-release gravity currents over sparse and dense rough bottoms

Dense oceanic overflows mix with surrounding waters along the descent down the continental slope. The existing parameterizations for entrainment in dense currents account primarily for the shear-induced entrainment at the interface between the dense flow and the ambient fluid. However, the turbulence generated by roughness elements at the bottom boundary, which produces an enhanced drag, can be...

The Front Condition for Gravity Currents Propagating over Rough Boundaries

Gravity currents – fluid flows generated by horizontal density gradients – are ubiquitous in the environment. An area of increasing interest in this general field is the interaction of gravity currents with boundary roughness, where that roughness may be of the scale of the current itself. This paper describes an experimental study investigating the impact of varying boundary roughness densitie...

Double-diffusive lock-exchange gravity currents

The dynamics of double-diffusive gravity currents exhibiting the fingering instability were examined using 2D and 3D simulations of a lock exchange initial configuration. It was found that although the spreading of the currents was governed by a balance of buoyancy and turbulent drag forces, currents with more intense fingering spread faster than those with less intense or no fingering. This wa...

Energy balances for propagating gravity currents: homogeneous and stratified ambients

The exchange of energy for an inviscid gravity current which is released from a lock and then propagates over a horizontal boundary is considered. Attention is focused on effects due to stratification in the ambient. The investigation uses both a one-layer shallow-water model and Navier–Stokes finite-difference simulations. There is good agreement between these two approaches for the energy of ...
