Locating real-time water level sensors in coastal communities to assess flood risk by optimizing across multiple objectives

چکیده
Abstract Coastal communities around the world are experiencing increased flooding. Water level sensors provide real-time information on water levels and detections of flood risk. Previous sensor installations, however, have relied qualitative judgments or limited quantitative factors to decide locations. Here, we a method optimally place across community. We utilize multi-objective optimization approach, including traditional measures network performance such as coverage uncertainty, new flood-specific parameters hazard estimations (flood likelihood, critical infrastructure exposure), serviceability (sensor accessibility), social vulnerability (socio-economic index, vulnerable residential index). propose workflow combining analyses with local expertise experience. show is able reduce set possible locations just 1.3% full solution set, supporting effective feasible community decision-making. The also supports sequential expansion network, creating that provides detailed accurate at hyperlocal for risk assessment mitigation in coastal communities.

Training dependency parsers by jointly optimizing multiple objectives
We present an online learning algorithm for training parsers which allows for the inclusion of multiple objective functions. The primary example is the extension of a standard supervised parsing objective function with additional loss-functions, either based on intrinsic parsing quality or task-specific extrinsic measures of quality. Our empirical results show how this approach performs for two...
متن کاملRetrieval of Water Constituents from Multiple Earth Observation Sensors in Coastal and Inland Water Environments
Applied water quality monitoring of coastal zones or aquatic systems, such as rivers and lakes, requires processing of multiple images with variable temporal and spatial resolution. Compatible results in this case can be obtained by sensor-independent processing techniques. The physics-based, flexible, modular image processing system MIP can ensure standardized product outputs for a variety of ...
متن کاملVulnerability of Coastal Communities from Storm Surge and Flood Disasters
Disasters in the form of coastal storms and hurricanes can be very destructive. Preparing for anticipated effects of such disasters can help reduce the public health and economic burden. Identifying vulnerable population groups can help prioritize resources for the most needed communities. This paper presents a quantitative framework for vulnerability measurement that incorporates both socioeco...
متن کاملRisk Sharing Across Communities
This paper studies cross-community risk sharing. There is now a large body of theoretical and empirical work on informal insurance, where people mitigate risk by sharing income. A consistent empirical finding is that risk-sharing is not complete within villages, often the observed sets of individuals.2 One reason, researchers suspect, is that risk-sharing does not take place at the village leve...
