Local Environmental Context Structures Animal-Habitat Associations Across Biogeographic Regions

چکیده

The mechanisms that govern fauna-habitat associations across multiple spatial scales remain largely undefined. Can environmental factors structure over both local and global scales, alongside biogeographical processes patterns? We compare the extent to which use of mangroves by fishes is consistent within between biogeographic locations, whether any similarities differences can be attributed context those forests, such as physical environment, seascape composition constraints on access fishes. focus three important proxies these structuring forces for fish—salinity, distance reefs tidal amplitude. Using directly comparable remote underwater visual census from a range diverse contexts in Central Eastern Indo-Pacific, we examine similarity family-level taxonomic fish assemblages mangrove forests. Local appears explain association at regional Indo-Pacific. There were strong consistencies similar despite geographic separation. Tidal amplitude was powerful explanatory factor interacted with reef salinity partitioning variation assemblage structure. Substantial regions appear independent historical biogeography, relating instead context. Our findings suggest effects habitat suitability play out may partially explained contexts, management implications.

Saproxylic Hemiptera Habitat Associations

Understanding the habitat requirements of organisms associated with dead wood is important in order to conserve them in managed forests. Unfortunately, many of the less diverse saproxylic taxa, including Hemiptera, remain largely unstudied. An effort to rear insects from dead wood taken from two forest types (an upland pine-dominated and a bottomland mixed hardwood), three tree species (Liquida...

Local diversity reduces infection risk across multiple freshwater hostparasite associations

1. In many host–parasite systems, infection risk can be reduced by high local biodiversity, though the mitigating effects of diversity are context dependent and not universal. 2. In aquatic ecosystems, local fauna can reduce the transmission success of parasite free-swimming infective stages by preying on them, acting as decoy hosts, or physically interfering with transmission. However, most pr...

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Cognition Across Development and Context.

Genes account for between approximately 50% and 70% of the variation in cognition at the population level. However, population-level estimates of heritability potentially mask marked subgroup differences. We review the body of empirical evidence indicating that (a) genetic influences on cognition increase from infancy to adulthood, and (b) genetic influences on cognition are maximized in more a...

Detours in long-distance migration across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau: individual consistency and habitat associations

Migratory birds often follow detours when confronted with ecological barriers, and understanding the extent and the underlying drivers of such detours can provide important insights into the associated cost to the annual energy budget and the migration strategies. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is the most daunting geographical barrier for migratory birds because the partial pressure of oxygen is ...
