Liver at the nexus of rat postnatal HPA axis maturation and sexual dimorphism

چکیده
Normal function of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is critical for survival, and its development choreographed age-, sex- context-specific actions. The liver influences HPA ontogeny, integrating diverse endocrine signals that inhibit or activate development. This review examines how developmental changes in expression genes coordinate postnatal multiple systems facilitate maturation sexual dimorphism rat axis. Specifically, it ontogeny testicular androgen production, somatostatin-growth hormone activities, hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid activity intersect to influence hepatic gene insulin-like growth factor 1, corticosteroid-binding globulin, thyroxine-binding 11?-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 5?-reductase 1. timing such molecular vary between mammalian species, but they are evolutionarily conserved poised control homeostasis broadly, especially during adversity. Importantly, with as their nexus, these establish fundamental organization throughout development, thereby ultimately determine actions glucocorticoids adulthood.

Stress and the HPA Axis
Stress has long been suggested to be an important correlate of uncontrolled drinking and relapse. An important hormonal response system to stress-the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis-may be involved in this process, particularly stress hormones known as glucocorticoids and primarily cortisol. The actions of this hormone system normally are tightly regulated to ensure that the body can ...
متن کاملSexual dimorphic expression of ADH in rat liver: importance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-liver axis.
Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity is higher in female than in male rats. Although sex steroids, thyroid, and growth hormone (GH) have been shown to regulate hepatic ADH, the mechanism(s) for sexual dimorphic expression is unclear. We tested the possibility that the GH secretory pattern determined differential expression of ADH. Gonadectomized and hypophysectomized male and female rat...
متن کاملHPA-axis responses during experimental colitis in the rat.
We investigated the responses of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis during experimental colitis induced by intracolonic administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid in the rat. On days 3 and 7 after induction of colitis, the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA level in the parvocellular paraventricular nucleus (pPVN) of the hypothalamus was reduced, the plasma ACTH lev...

Cell Type-Specific Sexual Dimorphism in Rat Pituitary Gene Expression During Maturation.
The most obvious functional differences between mammalian males and females are related to the control of reproductive physiology and include patterns of GnRH and gonadotropin release, the timing of puberty, sexual and social behavior, and the regulation of food intake and body weight. Using the rat as the best-studied mammalian model for maturation, we examined the expression of major anterior...
