Livelihood vulnerability increases human–wildlife interactions

چکیده
Summary Human–wildlife interactions (HWIs) occur in many rural African communities, with potential impacts on livelihood vulnerability. High vulnerability may force communities to employ strategies that increase the risk of negative HWIs, yet extent which HWIs drive or are driven by is unclear. We hypothesized more vulnerable households likely be exposed wildlife and experience interactions. To test this hypothesis, we calculated Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI) around Quirimbas National Park (north-eastern Mozambique) assessed whether there a link between HWIs. found two-way association LVI indeed taking greater risks encountering when fetching water from rivers, whereas less tended not encounters. also observed exert strong effect vulnerability, suggesting should included as an exposure factor assessments for households. recommend community considered designing HWI mitigation schemes implementing conservation measures.

Application of Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping in Livelihood Vulnerability Analysis
Feedback mechanisms are important in the analysis of vulnerability and resilience of social-ecological systems, as well as in the analysis of livelihoods, but how to evaluate systems with direct feedbacks has been a great challenge. We applied fuzzy cognitive mapping, a tool that allows analysis of both direct and indirect feedbacks and can be used to explore the vulnerabilities of livelihoods ...

Fisheries support livelihood of over half a billion of people globally. Many of these people live in coastal regions of developing countries; and have limited capacity to adapt and build resilience in the face of climate change. This research assesses the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of fishers in four coastal communities, Komenda, Elmina, Cape coast and Morree, in Ghana. Stru...
متن کاملTetrahydrobiopterin deficiency increases neuronal vulnerability to hypoxia.
Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential co-factor for nitric oxide synthases (NOS). The aim of the present work was to study whether BH4 deficiency affects the vulnerability of neurones in primary culture to hypoxia. Intracellular BH4 levels were depleted by pre-incubating neurones with 5 mm 2,4-diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine (DAHP) for 18 h, after which cells were exposed for 1 h to normoxic or...
متن کاملEnvironmental deterioration increases tadpole vulnerability to predation.
Human-induced environmental change is occurring at an unprecedented rate and scale. Many freshwater habitats, in particular, have been degraded as a result of increased salinity. Little is known about the effects of anthropogenic salinization on freshwater organisms, especially at sublethal concentrations, where subtle behavioural changes can have potentially drastic fitness consequences. Using...
متن کاملLivelihood security in face of drought - Assessing the vulnerability of pastoral households
Livestock grazing in drylands supports pastoral livelihoods but is facing multiple changes including shocks such as severe droughts. Herdsmen specifically cite drought events as a reason for the abandonment of their transhumance practices. The purpose of this study is to assess the relevance of drought as a driving force for losses of livelihood security leading to a specific systemic change – ...
