Litterfall and nutrient transfer dynamics in a successional gradient of tropical dry forest in Colombia

چکیده

Introduction: The litterfall production, foliar nutrient dynamics and decomposition are essential to maintain cycling, soil fertility, carbon regulation in terrestrial ecosystems. With several studies addressing the variation of these processes, their tropical dry forests (TDFs) remain unclear, due its complex interaction biotic abiotic factors. Objective: To evaluate litterfall, potential return use efficiency, a TDF successional gradient Tolima, Colombia. Methods: We quantified from November 2017 October 2019 12 plots distributed four stages: initial, early, intermediate, late forests. identified key tree species litter production characterized species. At community level, we C, N P return, C:N N:P ratio. Subsequently, analyze relationships between vegetation characteristics some chemical properties with ecological processes. Results: found that total (8.46 Mg ha-1 y-1) was double initial (4.45 y-1). Decomposition higher (k = 1.28) compared intermediate 0.97) 0.87). didn’t change along succession, but it did show differences study sites. structural development richness favored while conditions influenced returns decomposition. Conclusions: TDFs could recover ecosystem function related after disturbances cessation; however, quality is fundamental release nutrients.

Nutrient fluxes in litterfall of a secondary successional alluvial rain forest in Southern Brazil.

During forest succession, litterfall nutrient fluxes increase significantly. The higher inputs of organic matter and nutrients through litterfall affects positively soil fertility and the species composition, which are essential components in forest restoration and management programs. In the present study, the input of nutrients to the forest soil via litterfall components was estimated for tw...

Multiple nutrients limit litterfall and decomposition in a tropical forest.

To explore the importance of 12 elements in litter production and decomposition, we fertilized 36 1600 m(2)-plots with combinations of N, P, K, or micronutrients (i.e. B, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, S, Zn) for 6 years in a lowland Panamanian forest. The 90% of litter falling as leaves and twigs failed to increase with fertilization, but reproductive litter (fruits and flowers) increased by 43% with...

Predicting Tropical Dry Forest Successional Attributes from Space: Is the Key Hidden in Image Texture?

Biodiversity conservation and ecosystem-service provision will increasingly depend on the existence of secondary vegetation. Our success in achieving these goals will be determined by our ability to accurately estimate the structure and diversity of such communities at broad geographic scales. We examined whether the texture (the spatial variation of the image elements) of very high-resolution ...
