Listening as medicine: A thematic analysis

Realizations of the importance “the art medicine” in trust-building and patient satisfaction have resulted incorporation narrative medicine programs into training curricula. By learning how to respond stories as well communicate their own, healthcare providers can ensure that patients feel heard respected. This study seeks define what constitutes empathetic listening through a qualitative analysis personal narratives collected from patients, caregivers, across an urban academic system. Stories (n=41) underwent thematic note common experiences related during health system encounter. Eighteen grounded codes were identified which abstracted following five themes: (1) connection trust, (2) emotion vulnerability, (3) objectives experiences, (4) interaction opportunity, (5) challenges listening. The most theme “connection trust” indicated active person-centered care key drivers medical adherence. Encouraging become more comfortable verbalizing vulnerability also provided emotional relief. Taking time listen needs values advanced shared-decision making facilitated establishment objectives. Storytellers conveyed inherent process. helping listening, these results may enable development centered on improving clinician communication experience. We hope this encourages future research devoted quantifying subjective features such “emotion vulnerability” utilizing psychometrically validated instruments.
