Liquid-solid contact electrification when water droplets hit living plant leaves

چکیده

Abstract Contact electrification has gained interest as a mechanism for generating charges on surfaces. It also been shown that plant leaves generate by both solid-solid and liquid-solid contact. However, it is unclear how water droplets hitting leaf causes charging which structural features affect this phenomenon. Here, we show the in-situ surface structures of leaves, droplet composition, prior ionization influence living contact several superhydrophobic hydrophilic species. We find hierarchical responsible self-cleaning wetting, known Lotus effect, create specific pattern. Each characteristic signal in tissue depending structure composition epicuticular wax layer well composition. These findings give insight occurs nature, suggesting potential deriving new bio-based materials sensing energy harvesting artificial plant-hybrid devices.

Water-solid surface contact electrification and its use for harvesting liquid-wave energy.

Contact electrification, also called triboelectrification, is an old but well-known phenomenon in which surface charge transfer occurs when two materials are brought into contact. Although some of the fundamental mechanisms about triboelectrification are still under discussion, such as what subjects (electrons, ions, or small amounts of material) are transferred during the contact and separatio...

A Simple Approach to Characterize Gas-Aqueous Liquid Two-phase Flow Configuration Based on Discrete Solid-Liquid Contact Electrification

In this study, we first suggest a simple approach to characterize configuration of gas-aqueous liquid two-phase flow based on discrete solid-liquid contact electrification, which is a newly defined concept as a sequential process of solid-liquid contact and successive detachment of the contact liquid from the solid surface. This approach exhibits several advantages such as simple operation, pre...

Contact electrification between identical materials.

Contact electrification (CE), the transfer of charge between two surfaces that are brought into contact and then separated, plays a central role in several useful technologies, such as photocopying, laser printing, and electrostatic separation methods, but is also responsible for the build-up of charge leading to electrical shocks, explosions, mechanical jams, or damage of electronic equipment....

Force of adhesion upon loss of contact angle hysteresis: when a liquid behaves like a solid.

The theoretically predicted vanishment of the macroscopic contact angle hysteresis is found experimentally along with a small but finite force of adhesion (F(Ad)≈-0.5 μN) that, unexpectedly, is independent of the history of the preload. Our results agree with the prediction of a model in which the surface tension of the liquid provides the counterpart of the restoring force of an elastic solid,...

Ixodid ticks avoid contact with liquid water.

Larvae of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus and all life stages of the European sheep tick Ixodes ricinus avoid walking on a wet membrane surface surrounding a dry patch. Of 170 reactions made at a border with liquid water by 22 B. microplus larvae, 40% consisted of immediate turns to the opposite side to bring all the legs back onto a dry patch, 41% were walks along the border, during which ...
