Linking observed changes in pelagic catches to temperature and oxygen in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

چکیده

Warming increases the metabolic rates of fishes and drives their oxygen demands above environmental supply, leading to declines in fish growth smaller population sizes. Given wide variability species' sensitivity changing temperature levels, warming limitation may be altering composition communities hence, that fisheries catches. Here, we test hypothesis temperatures shape pelagic catches Eastern Tropical Pacific. We expect under warmer conditions, will dominated by tropical species with higher less surplus for growth. To this hypothesis, combined an index physiological vulnerability exploited large (e.g. tuna billfish) ocean levels catch data from 1970 2016. found is main driver changes performance fishery, causing a significant breakpoint relationship between sea surface Ecuador Galapagos Exclusive Economic Zones. Warm anomalies due El Niño were projected cause reductions fishes, although only led during extremely warm events. Our results suggest are vulnerable future warming, as increasing frequency, duration magnitude marine heatwaves associated climate change impact composition.

Oxygen: A Fundamental Property Regulating Pelagic Ecosystem Structure in the Coastal Southeastern Tropical Pacific

BACKGROUND In the southeastern tropical Pacific anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax) abundance have recently fluctuated on multidecadal scales and food and temperature have been proposed as the key parameters explaining these changes. However, ecological and paleoecological studies, and the fact that anchovies and sardines are favored differently in other regions, raise que...

Dolphin Habitats in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Research-ship surveys by the Southwest Fisheries Center provided information on the distributions of spotted, spinner, striped, and common dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific. The main surveys were conducted from January to March during 1976,1977,1979, and 1980. 1\\'0 ships were used per survey, and together they overlapped most areas in the eastern Pacific where dolphins and yellowfin tun...

Sea level variability in the eastern tropical Pacific as observed by TOPEX and Tropical OceanGlobal Atmosphere Tropical AtmosphereOcean Experiment

Sea surface height measurements from the TOPEX altimeter and dynamic height from Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean (TOGA TAO) moorings are used to explore sea level variability in the northeastern tropical Pacific Ocean. After the annual harmonic is removed, there are two distinct bands of variability: one band is centered at 5øN to 7øN and extends from 165øW to 110øW, ...
