Linking Federal Forest Restoration with Wood Utilization: Modeling Biomass Prices and Analyzing Forest Restoration Costs in the Northern Sierra Nevada

چکیده

Over half of California’s forestland is managed by the US Forest Service, and agency has identified a need to scale up forest restoration treatments in state one million acres per year 2025. However, high costs mechanical fuel reduction lack markets for biomass pose significant barriers accomplishing this target. The objectives case study were: (1) identify on federally-managed land Northern Sierra under variety harvesting scenarios haul distances facilities, (2) understand what market prices must be offered support such efforts. We modeled silvicultural prescription options, machine productivity costs, transportation assess economic thresholds. Biomass harvest, chip, ranged from $55/bone dry ton $118/bone ton, depending system scenario distance disposal site. Results suggest that cost far exceeds current biomass, additional investment needed adequately pay federal California. Additional takeaways include outlets closer supply sources can reduce both production local wood utilization campuses play key role supporting restoration.

Fire and Fire Surrogate Study in the Sierra Nevada: Evaluating Restoration Treatments at Blodgett Forest and Sequoia National Park

Management practices have altered both the structure and function of forests throughout the United States. Some of the most dramatic changes have resulted from fire exclusion, especially in forests that historically experienced relatively frequent, lowto moderateintensity fire regimes. In the Sierra Nevada, fire exclusion is believed to have resulted in widespread vegetation changes, including ...

Tropical forest recovery and restoration

R a week goes by without a news report sounding the alarm of the continued destruction of tropical forests and the concomitant loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as water retention, erosion control and carbon storage. Much of tropical deforestation, particularly in Latin America, is a result of land clearing for pasture and other agricultural uses1. Increasingly, these lands are ...

Microhabitat Associations of Northern Flying Squirrels in Burned and Thinned Forest Stands of the Sierra Nevada

—Prescribed burning and mechanical thinning are used to manage fuels within many western North American forest ecosystems, but few studies have examined the relative impacts of these treatments on forest wildlife. We sampled northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) and microhabitat variables in burned, thinned and control stands of mixed-conifer forest of the southern Sierra Nevada at the...
