Limited Mediterranean sea-level drop during the Messinian salinity crisis inferred from the buried Nile canyon

چکیده
Abstract The extreme Mediterranean sea-level drop during the Messinian salinity crisis has been known for >50 years, but its amplitude and duration remain a challenge. Here we estimate by restoring topography of Nile canyon vertical position coastline unloading post-Messinian sediment accounting flexural isostasy compaction. We original depth geomorphological base level River at ~600 m below present sea level, implying drawdown 2–4 times smaller than previously estimated from suggesting that salt precipitated under 1–3 km deep waters. This conclusion is odds with nearly-desiccated basin model (>2 drawdown) dominating scientific literature 50 years. Yet, 600 ca. five larger eustatic fluctuations impact on continental margins incomparable to any glacial fall.

Magmatic pulse driven by sea-level changes associated with the Messinian salinity crisis
Between 5 and 6 million years ago, during the so-called Messinian salinity crisis, the Mediterranean basin became a giant salt repository. The possibility of abrupt and kilometre-scale sea-level changes during this extreme event is debated. Messinian evaporites could signify either deep- or shallow-marine deposits, and ubiquitous erosional surfaces could indicate either subaerial or submarine f...
متن کاملClimate Implications of the Messinian Salinity Crisis using the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM3.1)
The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) occurred nearly 6 million years ago when the Mediterranean Sea (MS) was isolated from the Atlantic Ocean. High rates of evaporation and diminishing water input led to a 1500 -2500 m drop in MS level. In this study, four 20-year simulations are run using the NCAR CAM3 configured with the SOM. Two of the simulations are designed to represent specific events tha...

متن کاملHistorical colonization and demography of the Mediterranean damselfish, Chromis chromis.
The desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea during the Messinian Salinity Crisis 6.0-5.3 million years ago (Ma), caused a major extinction of the marine ichthyofauna of the Mediterranean. This was followed by an abrupt replenishment of the Mediterranean from the Atlantic after the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar. In this study, we combined demographic and phylogeographic approaches using mitoch...
