Life?form diversity across temperate deciduous forests of Western Eurasia: A different story in the understory

چکیده
Aim To analyse the biogeographic patterns of Temperate Deciduous Forests (TDFs) in Western Eurasia based on different life-forms and forests layers explore their relationships with current climate, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate topography. Location Eurasia. Taxon Vascular plants. Methods We delimited nine regions encompassing variability TDFs collected 1000 vegetation plots from each. deconstructed plant communities into three layers, tree, shrub floor. used (i) generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to influence historical topography species richness by accounting for regional effects (ii) redundancy analysis (RDA) variance partitioning describe variation life forms along abiotic gradients. The forest were analysed jointly separately. Results Balkans, Alps Carpathians appeared be richest species, whereas British Isles Hyrcanian region poorest. Annual temperature range annual mean best predictors whole dataset layer. tree layer was mainly explained elevation, floor more related differences between LGM climate. main predictor composition community, layer, while also influenced Main conclusions Our overview diversity temperate deciduous demonstrates drivers across layers. While trees is linked climatic conditions, driven postglacial-glacial stability, suggesting a origin trees.

How tree species identity and diversity affect light transmittance to the understory in mature temperate forests
Light is a key resource for plant growth and is of particular importance in forest ecosystems, because of the strong vertical structure leading to successive light interception from canopy to forest floor. Tree species differ in the quantity and heterogeneity of light they transmit. We expect decreases in both the quantity and spatial heterogeneity of light transmittance in mixed stands relativ...
متن کاملConvergence, Consilience, and the Evolution of Temperate Deciduous Forests.
The deciduous habit of northern temperate trees and shrubs provides one of the most obvious examples of convergent evolution, but how did it evolve? Hypotheses based on the fossil record posit that deciduousness evolved first in response to drought or darkness and preadapted certain lineages as cold climates spread. An alternative is that evergreens first established in freezing environments an...
متن کاملAltitudinal Patterns of Species Diversity and Phylogenetic Diversity across Temperate Mountain Forests of Northern China
The spatial patterns of biodiversity and their underlying mechanisms have been an active area of research for a long time. In this study, a total of 63 samples (20m × 30m) were systematically established along elevation gradients on Mount Tai and Mount Lao, China. We explored altitudinal patterns of plant diversity in the two mountain systems. In order to understand the mechanisms driving curre...
