Life stage-dependent genetic traits as drivers of plant–herbivore interactions

نویسندگان

چکیده

In recent decades, we have come to understand in great detail the mechanisms that allow plants and herbivorous arthropods withstand each other. Research into these interactions often focuses on specific life stages of animals, for pragmatic reasons. Yet it is well known lifecycles herbivores are accompanied by niche shifts can change their interactions. The occurrence changes defensive regulatory metabolic networks during development as driver plant–herbivore mainly inferred from behavioral patterns, but there increasingly molecular-mechanistic data support causality. particular, understanding signatures ontogenetic shifts, genetic basis, may prove be critical design knowledge-based crop protection strategies.

Differentiating genetic and environmental drivers of plantpathogen community interactions

1. Plant genotypic variation can shape associated arthropod and microbial communities locally, as has been demonstrated in controlled common garden experiments. However, the relative roles of plant genetics and the environment in defining communities at larger spatial scales are not well known. The environmental heterogeneity hypothesis maintains that plant genetic effects on associated communi...

Genetic Architecture of Growth Traits Revealed by Global Epistatic Interactions

Epistasis has long been recognized as fundamentally important in understanding the structure, function, and evolutionary dynamics of biological systems. Yet, little is known about how it is distributed underlying specific traits. Based on a global map of epistatic interactions in baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we show that epistasis is prevalent (∼13% increase from random expectation)...

Biological warfare: Microorganisms as drivers of host-parasite interactions.

Understanding parasite strategies for evasion, manipulation or exploitation of hosts is crucial for many fields, from ecology to medical sciences. Generally, research has focused on either the host response to parasitic infection, or the parasite virulence mechanisms. More recently, integrated studies of host-parasite interactions have allowed significant advances in theoretical and applied bio...

Cancer and life-history traits: lessons from host-parasite interactions.

Despite important differences between infectious diseases and cancers, tumour development (neoplasia) can nonetheless be closely compared to infectious disease because of the similarity of their effects on the body. On this basis, we predict that many of the life-history (LH) responses observed in the context of host-parasite interactions should also be relevant in the context of cancer. Parasi...
