Life Cycle Assessment of Existing and Alternative Options for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, Russia

A waste reform was recently introduced in Russia to divert from landfills. To help advance the reform, this paper presents a life cycle assessment of municipal solid management system Russia’s second largest city—Saint Petersburg—and its neighboring Leningrad region. Five scenarios were evaluated: current state (S0), expected post-reform 2024 (S1), and improved by increased landfill gas collection (S2), incineration (S3), separate (S4). The environmental impact assessed terms climate change, acidification, eutrophication, abiotic resource depletion (fossil fuels). results showed an overall reduction across all categories studied. (except depletion) achieved through source separation waste. Particularly, global warming potential reduced 0.328 kg CO2-eq./kg generated S0 0.010 S4. Regarding fuels), scenario is most beneficial, since it reduces 573%.
