Life and Lifeforms in Early Greek Atomism

چکیده

Abstract What is Leucippus and Democritus’ theory of the beginning life? How, if at all, did Democritus distinguish different kinds living things? These questions are challenging in part because these Atomists claim that all beings – including plants have a share reason understanding. We answer by examining extant evidence concerning their views on embryology, soul respiration, sense perception, thereby giving an overview life lifeforms early Greek atomism. show, first, generation happens through combining miniature copies parents’ atomic structures. Second, we argue take respiration to mark life. Yet they do not consider nor being ensouled humans, animals, from each other. Finally, make little distinction between perception thought, too cannot sharply beings. conclude advocated less anthropocentric more holistic view cosmos.

Beyond Atomism

Contemporary metaphysicians have been drawn to a certain attractive picture of the structure of the world. This picture consists in classical mereology, the priority of parts over wholes, and the well-foundedness of metaphysical priority. In this short note, I show that this combination of theses entails superatomism, which is a significant strengthening of mereological atomism. This commitment...

Beyond Atomism

In this note, I present a problem for a certain natural view about the structure of the world. I show that this view is committed to a particular strengthening of atomism, which I call superatomism. Superatomism has some counterintuitive consequences (e.g. it rules out whatMarkosian [] calls the ‘pointy view’ of simples). I consider some ways of avoiding this commitment, and draw some additio...

Atomism and Quantization∗

Within the framework of the theory of interacting classical and quantum gases it is shown that the atomistic constitution of gases can be understood as a consequence of (second) quantization of a continuum theory of gases. In this note this is explained in some detail for the theory of non-relativistic interacting Bose gases, which can be viewed as the second quantization of a continuum theory ...

Peripheral Positions in Early Greek

This paper aims to provide a new approach to the development of clause structure in L1 acquisition on the basis of the distinction between LF-interpretable and LFuninterpretable features which is argued to have effects on learnability. The study concentrates on the acquisition of syntactic phenomena which are related to the syntax / pragmatics interface, namely focusing, dislocation and clitic-...

Atomism in Ancient Medical History.

THE history of the development of the atomic theory is usually imagined to be the exclusive province of chemistry and physics, and there is a tendency to suppose that molecular biology is one of the most recent products of twentiethcentury science. For these reasons it is surprising to discover that the paths of the corpuscular world-view and theoretical physiology crossed more than two thousan...
