LGBTQI + Refugees’ and Asylum Seekers’ Mental Health: A Qualitative Systematic Review

Abstract Introduction LGBTQI + refugees and asylum seekers experience enormous distress during their lifespan. Ill-effects of socio-cultural stigma, systemic violence, forced migration due to sexual orientation, gender identity or expressions, sex characteristics ( SOGIESC ) are not only challenge. The cumbersome process in host countries negatively affects mental health well-being. objective this systematic review was retrieve, critically evaluate synthesize the evidence from qualitative data relating conditions migrants before, during, after resettlement. Methods Seven Databases (Web Science, PubMed, Taylor, Francis online as well MEDLINE, PSYNDEX, PsycINFO, PsycArticles via EBSCO) were queried with relevant search terms between January April 2020. To be included analysis, studies had published peer-reviewed journals 2002 Of 410 records, 23 them met inclusion criteria. Two low-score records removed critical evaluation CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Program). Data 21 extracted. Qualitative meta-aggregation implemented synthesis strategy. Results Four emerged themes linked distress: Violence/discrimination, healthcare access barriers, system challenges, unaddressed difficulties. Coping strategies support resources two other across within data. Conclusions Experiencing violence deprivation equitable services origin status, difficulties process, limited care detention centers, cultural financial barriers countries, finally, discrimination based on multiple marginalized identities explain how condition is inextricably intertwined structural discrimination. Policy Implications Host need ensure migrant local communities aware state equality anti-discrimination policies. Service providers both systems trained for affirmative, culturally sensitive, intersectional approaches practice avoid treating queer clients against expectations stereotypes. Also, they should address authentic accounts resilience resistance migrants.
