Leveraging UAVs to Enable Dynamic and Smart Aerial Infrastructure for ITS and Smart Cities: An Overview

Micro-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have been recognized an emerging technology offering a plethora of applications touching various aspects our lives, such surveillance, agriculture, entertainment, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Furthermore, due to their low cost ability be fitted with transmitters, cameras, other on-board sensors, UAVs can seen potential flying Internet-of-things (IoT) devices interconnecting environment allowing for more mobile flexibility in the network. This paper overviews beneficial that offer smart cities, particularly ITS, while highlighting main challenges encountered. Afterward, it proposes several solutions organize operation UAV swarms, addressing one issues: battery-limited capacity. Finally, open research areas should undertaken strengthen case become part infrastructure futuristic cities are discussed.
