Lessons From Critical Race Theory: Outdoor Experiential Education and Whiteness in Kinesiology

Background: Outdoor experiential education (OEE) is often presented as a neutral and equitable curricular practice with positive learning outcomes. However, few studies have examined the experiences of racialized queer White settler students or representation Whiteness in OEE documents. Purpose: This article explores Whiteness, racialization, Indigenous erasure an undergraduate at Kinesiology program Canadian university. Methodology/Approach: Using critical race theory, discourse analysis six types documents used to advertise organize outdoor courses was combined five semi-structured interviews students. Findings/Conclusions: study demonstrates that must negotiate colonialism participate OEE. Three main findings include following: (a) The imagined student wealthy White, (b) both assimilate resist codes (c) practices promote Eurocentricity erase Indigeneity. Implications: presents opportunity for preparing become workers educators sport recreation learn about design can use narratives shift from supposedly pedagogies ones expose work toward dismantling Eurocentricity.
