چکیده

The concept of updating (or conditioning or revising) a probability distribution is fundamental in (machine) learning and predictive coding theory. two main approaches for doing so are called Pearl's rule Jeffrey's rule. Here we make, the first time, mathematically precise what distinguishes them: increases validity (expected value) decreases (Kullback-Leibler) divergence. This forms an instance more general distinction between from what's right wrong. difference these illustrated mock cognitive scenario.

Some whats, whys and worries of geoengineering

In this paper I discuss the nature of geoengineering, some of its attractions, and some reasons for concern. I claim that there is confusion in the use of the term ‘geoengineering’ that is related to larger concerns about the language in which responses to climate change are discussed. I conclude that despite some reasonable grounds for suspicion, research in areas that involve carbon dioxide r...

Whats and whys with neonatal CT.

What and why? As health care professionals, we must address both of these questions in scientific inquiry as well as in clinical practice. Most times, facts (the “what”) are relatively easy to come by. The reasons (the “why”) behind these events are usually more difficult to discover and understand. Let us look at the example of head computed tomography (CT) in a group of neonates. There are 2 ...

Whats, hows and whys of programmed DNA elimination in Tetrahymena

Programmed genome rearrangements in ciliates provide fascinating examples of flexible epigenetic genome regulations and important insights into the interaction between transposable elements (TEs) and host genomes. DNA elimination in Tetrahymena thermophila removes approximately 12 000 internal eliminated sequences (IESs), which correspond to one-third of the genome, when the somatic macronucleu...
