Learning from architectural theory about how cities work as complex and evolving spatial systems

چکیده

Abstract This article seeks to advance a key element of the methodological framework for evolutionary economic geography (EEG)—the conceptualisation ‘urban space’. Drawing on recent theories from architecture and urban data science, it argues that networked topological qualities built environments have been neglected in EEG discipline, yet they play an important role how cities work as ‘complex evolving systems’. The explores different ways which spatial configuration influences evolution, drawing Bill Hillier’s theory space syntax case study Greater Manchester. It concludes when street systems are disrupted this can potentially become one contributing factor why places economically ‘left behind’.

Human systems as linguistic systems: preliminary and evolving ideas about the implications for clinical theory.

From our earliest practice of family therapy at medical schools, private family therapy institutes, and public agencies, our work with difficult populations that do not respond to current treatment technologies has reminded us of the inadequacies of our theoretical descriptions and the limitations of our expertise. This work has influenced our current, evolving clinical theory as we move from t...

Learning in and about complex systems

Change is accelerating, and as the complexity of the systems in which we live grows, so do the unanticipated side effects of human actions, further increasing complexity. Many scholars call for the development of systems thinking to improve our ability to manage wisely. But how do people learn in and about complex dynamic systems? Learning is a feedback process in which our decisions alter the ...

Studying Cities to Learn about Minds How Geometric Intuitions Shape Urban Space and Make It Work

What can we learn of the human mind by examining its products? Here it is argued that a great deal can be learned, and that the study of human minds through its creations in the real world could be a promising field of study within the cognitive sciences. The city is a case in point. Since the beginning of cities human ideas about them have been dominated by geometric ideas, and the real histor...

From theory to modelling : urban systems as complex systems

The question of complexity and its increasing application to social sciences is challenging the modelling of spatial systems. New concepts and new methods have been proposed and invite to reformulate classical modelling frames. This approach is demanding to open a better informed dialogue between the disciplines which supply models and tools and those where the existing knowledge is reformulate...

Architectural Techniques for Evolving Control Systems

We propose a layered architecture based on the separation of two concerns – computation and coordination – as a means of achieving higher levels of reconfigurability for control systems. This separation makes it possible for changes to be operated on the way system components are interconnected , which includes the way they are controlled, without intruding on the way they are deployed, enablin...
