Learners Emphasize Their Intrinsic Load if Asked About It First: Communicative Aspects of Cognitive Load Measurement

چکیده
Cognitive load measurement is an important aspect of educational research. Current cognitive surveys differentiate between intrinsic (resulting from the complexity learning materials) and their extraneous (which increased by a demanding design). In two studies, order effects subscales are demonstrated. Asking learners regarding first increases responses concerning this type load, with little effect on ratings. This can be replicated even when intentionally induced. finding has implications for research, as appears to bias As most research conducted find ways reducing it may reasonable carefully consider whether items included in studies. Generally, results show that study participants seem emphasize certain demands, similar dialogue.

Learners’ Cognitive Load When Using Educational Technology
Games, with features such as voluntariness, fantasy, specific rules/goals, artificial gains/payoffs, competition or cooperation, sensory and motor involvement, challenge, control, low costs of trial and error, and associated amusement (Garris, Ahlers, & Driskell, 2002), might have existed as a type of leisure activity as early as the dawn of civilization, when adults had sufficient food and chi...
متن کاملThe Influence of a Pedagogical Agent on Learners' Cognitive Load
According to cognitive load theorists, the incorporation of extraneous features, such as pedagogical agents, into the learning environment can introduce extraneous cognitive load and thus interfere with learning outcome scores. In this study, the influence of a pedagogical agent’s presence in an instructional video was compared to a video that did not contain a pedagogical agent. The results in...
متن کاملCommunicative Gestures and Memory Load
Previous research has shown that (co-speech) hand gestures sometimes aid cognition and can reduce a speaker’s cognitive load. We argue that this is not the case for gestures that are produced primarily to communicate, which we think come at a cognitive cost to speakers instead. In a production experiment with a narrative task, we show that speakers gesture more frequently with a less demanding ...
متن کاملComplex Mobile Learning that Adapts to Learners' Cognitive Load
Mobile learning is cognitively demanding and frequently the ubiquitous nature of mobile computing means that mobile devices are used in cognitively demanding environments. This paper examines the use of mobile devices from a Learning, Usability and Cognitive Load Theory perspective. It suggests scenarios where these fields interact and presents an experiment which determined that several source...
متن کاملDon't mind if I do: disinhibited eating under cognitive load.
Past research has shown that strong emotional or motivational states can cause normally restrained eaters to overeat. In this article it is argued that simple cognitive load can also disinhibit eating by restrained eaters. Two studies examined this disinhibition effect. In Study 1, restrained and unrestrained eaters were given the opportunity to consume high-calorie food while performing either...
