Layered seawater intrusion and melt under grounded ice

چکیده
Abstract. Increasing melt of ice sheets at their floating or vertical interfaces with the ocean is a major driver marine sheet retreat and sea level rise. However, extent to which warm, salty seawater may drive melting under grounded portions still not well understood. Previous work has explored possibility that dense intrudes beneath relatively light subglacial freshwater discharge, similar “salt wedge” observed in many estuarine systems. In this study, we develop generalized theory layered intrusion ice, including where hydrology occurs as macroporous water over impermeable beds microporous Darcy flow through permeable till. Using predictions from theory, show flat reverse-sloping feasibly occur up tens kilometers upstream glacier terminus grounding line. On other hand, unlikely intrude more than meters Simulations using Ice-sheet Sea-level System Model (ISSM) even just few hundred basal caused by lines can cause projections volume loss be 10 %–50 % higher. Kilometers intrusion-induced projected double. These results suggest further observational, experimental numerical investigations are needed determine conditions whether it will indeed rapid rise future.

Automated Ice-Tethered Profilers for Seawater Observations under Pack Ice in All Seasons
An automated, easily deployed Ice-Tethered Profiler (ITP) instrument system, developed for deployment on perennial sea ice in the polar oceans to measure changes in upper ocean water properties in all seasons, is described, and representative data from prototype instruments are presented. The ITP instrument consists of three components: a surface subsystem that sits atop an ice floe; a weighted...
متن کاملModes of seawater intrusion during transgressions
Analytical methods and numerical experiments are used to study salinization of groundwater in response to sea level rise. The system that is studied involves a saturated porous medium with an inclined upper surface. The upper surface is progressively inundated during sea level rise to simulate transgression, the landward migration of the shoreline. Four "modes" of seawater intrusion are disting...
متن کاملFormal derivation of seawater intrusion models
In this paper, we consider the flow of fresh and saltwater in a saturated porous medium in order to describe the seawater intrusion. Starting from a formulation with constant densities respectively of fresh and of saltwater, whose velocity is proportional to the gradient of pressure (Darcy’s law), we consider the formal asymptotic shallow water limit as the ratio between the thickness and the h...
متن کاملAbstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
