Latest Smithian (Early Triassic) ammonoid assemblages in Utah (western USA basin) and their implications for regional biostratigraphy, biogeography and placement of the Smithian/Spathian boundary

چکیده
The late Smithian extinction represents a major event within the Early Triassic. This generally corresponds to succession of two, possibly three successively less diverse, cosmopolitan ammonoid assemblages, which when present, provide robust biostratigraphic framework and precise correlations at different spatial scales. In western USA basin, known occurrences latest taxa are rare until now, have only been documented from northeastern Nevada. Based on these restricted basinal occurrences, regional zone representing was postulated but not corroborated, as representative had yet reported outside Here we document two new assemblages distant localities in northern Utah, overlying Anasibirites beds characterized by unambiguous co-occurrence Xenoceltites subevolutus Pseudosageceras augustum. existence basin is therefore validated, facilitating identification Smithian/Spathian boundary intra-basin correlation. also correlates with recognized southern Tethyan basins. Additionally, data support other observed throughout most Smithian.

Smithian (early Triassic) Ammonoid Biostratigraphy at Crittenden Springs, Elko County, Nevada and a New Ammonoid from the Meekoceras Gracilitatis Zone
Crittenden Springs in northeastern Nevada yields M. gracilitatis Zone ammonoids renowned for the finely detailed, exquisite preservation of the test, which sometimes even displays relict color patterns. Evidence reveals most of the fossiliferous Lower Triassic beds in the Crittenden Springs area are overturned and this conclusion places the Meekoceras gracilitatis Zone portion of the section an...
متن کاملPalaeoecology of the Spathian Virgin Formation (Utah, USA) and its implications for the Early Triassic recovery
The Spathian (late Early Triassic) Virgin Formation of south-western Utah (U.S.A.) yields a comparatively diverse benthic fauna that flourished 2 Ma after the end-Permian mass extinction. In this study, we present quantitative palaeoecological data, which are analysed in the context of their depositional environments. This integrated approach helps to discriminate between effects of the end-Per...

Following the end-Permian mass extinction, ammonoids were among the fastest clades to recover (Brayard et al., 2006), with at least two diversification phases during the Early Triassic. Diversification first peaked during the Smithian and was followed by a marked extinction phase at the end of this (sub-)stage. It was then followed by a second and massive evolutionary radiation during the Spath...
