Masking of the signal for lateralization of tones

Elliott and Wilbanks (1980) have shown that when listeners attempt to localize a tone in noise, the "signal" for lateralization is the change in the interaural phase between tone plus noise and the interaural phase of the noise alone. This "signal" can be masked by increasing the level of the noise and by reducing the interaural correlation of the noise. Data are presented showing how the maski...

Lateralization of sine tones-interaural time vs phase (L).

Listeners estimated the lateral positions of 50 sine tones with interaural phase differences ranging from -150 degrees to +150 degrees and with different frequencies, all in the range where signal fine structure supports lateralization. The estimates indicated that listeners lateralize sine tones on the basis of interaural time differences and not interaural phase differences.

Lateralization by frequency for repeating sequences of dichotic 400- and 800-Hz tones.

Subjects made lateralization judgments involving dichotic sequences of 250-ms tones, which alternated in frequency between 400 and 800 Hz, such that when one ear received 400 Hz the other ear received 800 Hz, and vice versa. With sequences consisting of 20 dichotic tone pairs there was a strong tendency to lateralize each fused tonal percept toward the ear receiving the 800-Hz signal. In certai...

Tones and non-tones in Kammu dialects

This is apreliminary report on the phonetic interaction of tone and consonant voicing in K m u , a language where some dialects use Fo for producing distinctive word tones, while others do not have tones but rely on the contrastive voicing of initial consonants to distinguish words which tonal dialects distinguishes with tones. Speakers of non-tonal dialects produce no significant Fo diflerence...

Comparing behavioral and physiological measures of combination tones: sex and race differences.

Both distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and performance in an auditory-masking task involving combination tones were measured in the same frequency region in the same ears. In the behavioral task, a signal of 3.6 kHz (duration 300 ms, rise/fall time 20 ms) was masked by a 3.0-kHz tone (62 dB SPL, continuously presented). These two frequencies can produce a combination tone at 2.4...
