Lateglacial paleoglacier and paleoclimate reconstructions in the north-western Italian Alps

چکیده

Lateglacial (19.0–11.7 ka ago) paleo-temperature records in the Western European Alps document several short-term cooling episodes within general post-Last Glacial Maximum warming trend, phase with North Hemisphere climatic oscillations. Alpine paleo-precipitation reconstructions are instead rare, and further constraints needed order to assess whether cold periods were associated a modified atmospheric circulation pattern over Alps. The paleoglacial record offers quantitative framework investigate paleoclimatic conditions glacier sensitivity response both temperature precipitation changes. Through combination of 10Be surface-exposure dating glacial landforms deposits constraining ice front surface, together numerical simulations (iSOSIA), our study aims reconstruct space time main stages paleo-climatic three tributary valleys (Valpelline, Valsavarenche Val di Cogne) located Dora Baltea catchment (north-western Italian Alps). Our dating-modelling approach reveals all investigated sectors two distinct paleoglacier at ca. 13 11 ka, documenting respectively configurations transition between Oldest Dryas period Bølling-Allerød interstadial, Younger early Holocene warming. Numerical ice-simulation outcomes suggest similar-to-today during stages, either same absolute or homogeneously decreased values catchment, although unique solution magnitudes could not be constrained from dataset. Using present-day magnitude, results provide offsets ?3.3 ?3.8 °C for older stage, ?2.7 ?3.2 younger coinciding upper range other proxies. Finally, glaciers’ climate fluctuations differ significantly catchments, much higher changes Equilibrium Line Altitude northern (Valpelline) compared southern (Valsavarenche tributaries, reflecting different topographic and/or valleys.

Hydrogeological model and hydraulic behaviour of a large landslide in the Italian Western Alps

A study of the large, deep-seated Rosone landslide (Italian Western Alps) is presented. A large amount of geological and geomechanical data has been collected in this area, due to the presence of various villages and man-made structures, and an automatic monitoring system was installed in December 2000. Since its installation, this system has been showing a continuous slow movement with periodi...

Proxy inconsistency and other problems in millennial paleoclimate reconstructions.

Mann et al. (1) present two paleoclimate reconstruction methods [‘‘error-in-variables’’ (EIV) and ‘‘composite plus scale’’ (CPS)], claiming statistically significant skill for both. Their figure 3 reveals that from approximately 750 to 1100, the CPS 95% confidence interval excludes the EIV 95% confidence interval and vice versa. This is evidence not of skill, but of inconsistency. Contrary to a...

Composition and Antioxidant Activity of the Essential Oil from Achillea moschata Wulfen Growing in Valchiavenna and Valmalenco (Italian Central Alps)

Achillea moschata Wulfen (Asteraceae) is an endemic species growing on the Alps and traditionally used in several medicinal remedies. For its aromatic properties, it is also collected for food purposes. Chemical content and biological activity of A. moschata oil are not extensively studied. We investigated whether the different lithological and geomorphological features of two alpine areas incl...

Dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) assemblages in the western Italian Alps: benchmark data for land use monitoring

BACKGROUND Traditional agro-pastoral practices are in decline over much of the Alps (MacDonald et al. 2000), leading to shrub and tree encroachment, and this represents one of the main threats for the conservation of alpine biodiversity, as many plant and animal species are dependent on the presence of semi-natural open habitats. However, quantifying this environmental change and assessing its ...

Cenozoic Paleoclimate on Land in North America

Paleotemperature and paleoprecipitation over the past 40 m.yr. can be inferred from the degree of chemical weathering and depth of carbonate nodules in paleosols of Oregon, Montana, and Nebraska. Paleosol records show that late Eocene (35 Ma), middle Miocene (16 Ma), late Miocene (7 Ma), and early Pliocene (4 Ma) warm climatic episodes were also times of a wet climate in Oregon, Montana, and Ne...
