چکیده

Abstract Late Cenozoic was a period of large-scale extension in the Aegean. The is mainly recorded metamorphic core complexes with little data from sedimentary sequences. exception Thrace Basin northern Aegean, which has continuous record Middle Eocene to Oligocene marine sedimentation. In Basin, Oligocene–Early Miocene characterized by north-northwest (N25°W) shortening leading termination sedimentation and formation folds. We studied stratigraphy structure one these folds, Korudağ anticline. anticline formed uppermost Eocene–Lower siliciclastic turbidites Early (31.6 Ma zircon U–Pb age) acidic tuff beds. are underlain thin sequence Upper pelagic limestone. an east-northeast (N65°E) trending fault-propagation fold, 9 km wide 22 long subhorizontal fold axis. It asymmetric shallowly-dipping steeply-dipping southern limbs. Its geometry indicates about 1 N25°W direction. folded strata unconformably overlain continental sandstones, constrain age folding. other large folds predate inception North Anatolian Fault (NAF) at least 12 myr. (28–17 Ma) elsewhere Balkans forms interlude between two extensional periods, probably linked changes subduction dynamics along Hellenic trench.

Late Miocene episodic lakes in the arid Tarim Basin, western China.

The Tibetan Plateau uplift and Cenozoic global cooling are thought to induce enhanced aridification in the Asian interior. Although the onset of Asian desertification is proposed to have started in the earliest Miocene, prevailing desert environment in the Tarim Basin, currently providing much of the Asian eolian dust sources, is only a geologically recent phenomenon. Here we report episodic oc...

Geodynamics of SW-Pannonian inselbergs (Mecsek and Villány Mts, SW Hungary): Inferences from a complex structural analysis

Three independent methods: paleomagnetic investigation, analysis of reflection seismic sections and structural study of outcrops have been applied to MesozoicTertiary rocks of the Mecsek and Villány Mts (SW Hungary), which form inselbergs in the southern part of the Pannonian Basin. The structural history is marked by Late OligoceneEarly Miocene NW-SE shortening (in present cooridinates); late ...

Faunal and environmental change in the late Miocene Siwaliks of northern Pakistan

—The Siwalik formations of northern Pakistan consist of deposits of ancient rivers that existed throughout the early Miocene through the late Pliocene. The formations are highly fossiliferous with a diverse array of terrestrial and freshwater vertebrates, which in combination with exceptional lateral exposure and good chronostratigraphic control allows a more detailed and temporally resolved st...

First evidence of “ancient deer” (cervid) in the late Miocene Bira Formation, Northern Israel

Despite the extensive geological and paleontological searches in the south Levant, no terrestrial fauna of late Neogene age was yet reported. Here, we report the first evidence of "ancient deer"-cervid in the late Miocene (Tortonian) lacustrine section of the Bira Formation at Hagal Stream, Jordan Valley, northern Israel. The section comprises rich assemblage of macrofauna fossils, mostly fresh...
