چکیده
Abstract. Late Miocene to Pliocene sediments from the NW Australian shelf, drilled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 356, provide unique records of paleoclimatic variations under warmer-than-present conditions. During period 6 3.5 Ma, area was dominated warm, tropical waters supplied an intensified, uninterrupted Indonesian throughflow and characterised prevailing humid conditions, including increased precipitation river runoff. Despite available information regarding general little is known about concurrent regional ocean circulation patterns relative strength seasonally flowing boundary currents, such as Leeuwin Current. In this study, we investigate two astronomically tuned calcareous nannofossil time series IODP Sites U1463 U1464 track long-term changes in water column stratification, which influences availability nutrients upper photic zone considered be a primary control on (paleo)productivity marine phytoplankton. By documenting shifts dominant species within assemblages comparing these paleotemperature gradients between shelf eastern Indian Ocean, identify significant change ecological oceanographic regime that occurred across Miocene–Pliocene (5.4–5.2 Ma), can attributed overall intensification mixing over shelf. Significant abundance composition reflect broader-scale processes evolutionary events, termination late early biogenic bloom (4.6–4.4 Ma) extinction Sphenolithus spp. (∼3.54 long after shift.

Accelerated simulation of passive tracers in ocean circulation models
A novel strategy is proposed for the efficient simulation of geochemical tracers in ocean models. The method captures the tracer advection and diffusion in a general circulation model (GCM) without any alteration (or even knowledge) of the GCM code. In comparison with offline tracer models, the proposed method is considerably more efficient and automatically includes all parameterizations of un...
متن کاملCirculation Over the Continental Shelf of the Southeastern Bering Sea
5 Using extensive direct current measurements made during the period 1975-78, we describe flow over the southeastern Bering Sea shelf. Characteristics of the flow permit us to define three distinct regimes, nearly coincident with the hydrographic domains defined in the previous chapter. The coastal regime, inshore of the 50 m isobath, had a slow (1-5 em/sec) counterclockwise mean current and oc...
متن کاملQuantitative Studies of Late Neogene Coastal Environments Using Bivalve Subfossil and Fossil Assemblages
Coastal environments are important in many ways: they provide food and energy for coastal communities, have a variety of unique biologic habitats, and influence global climate. These environments can change due to either anthropogenic or natural phenomena over a wide range of time scales. However, the often overlooked long-term (centennial to millennial) processes may be hidden behind short-ter...
متن کاملObservations of CFCs and SF6 as ocean tracers.
An advantage of using chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as tracers of ocean circulation is that the time-dependent source functions permit calculation of rates for ocean processes. These compounds are also sensitive indicators highlighting interior ocean regions where surface-derived anomalies can be transported on timescales of decades. Significant applications for CFCs ...
متن کاملCalcareous nannofossil assemblages of the Late Campanian- Early Maastrichtian form Gurpi Formation (Dezful embayment, SW Iran): Evidence of a climate cooling event
A succession of Late Campanian- Early Maastrichtian is analyzed from Gurpi Formation with regard to the calcareous nannofossils. Correlation Matrix was applied for the first time to the entire nannofossil assemblage to reconstruct environmental conditions. A detailed quantitative calcareous nannofossil analyses is performed on samples in order to further investigate the climate events, and inte...
