Laser Peening Analysis of Aluminum 5083: A Finite Element Study

In this research, a finite element (FE) technique was used to predict the residual stresses in laser-peened aluminum 5083 at different power densities. A dynamic pressure profile create wave an explicit model, and stress results were extracted once solution stabilized. It is shown that as density increases from 0.5 4 GW/cm2, induced develop monotonically deeper 0.42 1.40 mm. However, with increase density, maximum magnitude of sub-surface only up certain threshold (1 GW/cm2 for 5083). Above threshold, complex interaction elastic plastic waves occurring peak pressures above ≈2.5 Hugoniot Elastic Limit (HEL) decreased surface stresses. The FE are corroborated physical experiments observations.
