Laser cladding of bioactive glass coating on pure titanium substrate with highly refined grain structure

Free from toxic elements biomaterial potentially applicable for load bearing biomedical implants was obtained the first time by laser cladding of S520 bioactive glass onto ultrafine-grained commercially pure titanium. The process affected refined structure substrate inducing martensitic transformation near its surface. ?’ acicular martensite gradually passes into relatively large grains with increasing distance surface, which subsequently are transformed smaller about 2 ?m in diameter. Both melted zone, where crystalline found, and HAZ characterised lower hardness comparison that core indicating increased ductility. Such a combination zones different properties may have synergistic effect is beneficial biomaterial. A characteristic region form 3 width band formed zone at 10 below titanium results EDS analysis indicate several moved while content same area decreased. High bioactivity coated revealed vitro testing SBF solution almost complete reduction P concentration occurred after 14 days.
