Large?Scale Fracture Systems Are Permeable Pathways for Fault Activation During Hydraulic Fracturing

چکیده

Induced seismicity due to fluid injection, including hydraulic fracturing, is an increasingly common phenomenon worldwide; yet, the mechanisms by which fracturing causes fault activation remain unclear. Here we show that preexisting fracture networks are instrumental in transferring pressures larger faults on dynamic rupture occurs. Studies of fracturing-induced North America have often used observations from regional seismograph at distances 10s km, and as such lack resolution answer some key questions about triggering mechanisms. To carry out a more detailed analysis activation, use data dense sensor array located hydraulic-fracturing site Alberta, Canada. The spatiotemporal distribution event hypocenters, coupled with measurements seismic anisotropy, reveal presence corridors allowed communication fluid-pressure perturbations faults, over 1 km or more. permeable can significantly increase volume rock affected pore-pressure increase, thereby increasing probability induced seismicity. This study demonstrates importance understanding connectivity natural fractures for assessing potential hazards associated shale formations offers case exposition fracturing.

Hydraulic Fracturing Simulation for Fracture Networks

The term ‘Unconventional Reservoirs’ is used in the oil and gas industry for hydrocarbon reservoirs that have very low permeability in the magnitude of microdarcy (μd) and therefore rely on artificially introducing pathways for fluids and gases, commonly by using hydraulic fracturing techniques, to enable economic production. This approach of using fracturing stimulation campaigns is also incre...

Hydraulic Fracturing in Formations with Permeable Natural Fractures

The recently developed Unconventional Fracture Model (UFM*) simulates complex hydraulic fracture network propagation in a formation with pre-existing closed natural fractures, and explicitly models hydraulic injection into a fracture network with multiple propagating branches [1]. The model predicts whether a hydraulic fracture front crosses or is arrested by a natural fracture it encounters, w...

Behavior of a hydraulic fracture in permeable formations

The permeability and coupled behavior of pore pressure and deformations play an important role in hydraulic fracturing (HF) modeling. In this work, a poroelastic displacement discontinuity method is used to study the permeability effect on the HF development in various formation permeabilities. The numerical method is verified by the existing analytical and experimental data. Then the propagati...

Self-Potential Observations During Hydraulic Fracturing

The self-potential (SP) response during hydraulic fracturing of intact Sierra granite was investigated in the laboratory. Excellent correlation of pressure drop and SP suggests that the SP response is created primarily by electrokinetic coupling. For low pressures, the variation of SP with pressure drop is linear, indicating a constant coupling coefficient (Cc) of -200 mV/MPa. However for press...
