Landscape spatial configuration influences phosphorus but not nitrate concentrations in agricultural headwater catchments

چکیده

Landscape organized (or structured) heterogeneity influences hydrological and biogeochemical patterns across space time. We developed landscape indices that describe the spatial configuration of nutrient sources sinks as a function their distance to stream (lateral dimension) or outlet (longitudinal intersection with flow-accumulation areas. Using monthly nitrate, total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive (SRP) daily discharge (Q) data from 221 rural catchments (1–300 km2) 2010–2020, we observed higher variability in flow-weighted mean concentrations smaller than larger ones. The configurations also decreased increasing catchment size. A index, calculated arable land use weighted by on flow accumulation, improved prediction TP SRP, but not compared unweighted use. conclude transfer more nitrate transfer, zones riparian areas are critical source for respectively. By contrast, lateral (upslope–downslope) longitudinal (upstream–downstream) dimensions did have an identifiable influence nutrients temporal dynamics. this study can help design landscapes minimize diffuse losses streams show management is first order control losses.

Carbon storage of headwater riparian zones in an agricultural landscape

BACKGROUND In agricultural regions, streamside forests have been reduced in age and extent, or removed entirely to maximize arable cropland. Restoring and reforesting such riparian zones to mature forest, particularly along headwater streams (which constitute 90% of stream network length) would both increase carbon storage and improve water quality. Age and management-related cover/condition cl...

Reply to Castellano and David: Long-term fate of nitrate fertilizer and nitrate from agricultural catchments.

We thank Castellano and David for their insightful comments (1) on our paper (2), in which they point out that short-term changes in land use and agricultural management can lead to rapid reductions in nitrate leaching from agricultural systems. We fully agree with Castellano and David that in diversified cropping systems, this N distribution may be different, potentially resulting in reduced n...

Spatial Inference of Nitrate Concentrations in Groundwater

We develop a method for multi-scale estimation of pollutant concentrations, based on a nonparametric spatial statistical model. We apply this method to estimate nitrate concentrations in groundwater over the mid-Atlantic states, using measurements gathered during a period of ten years. A map of the fine-scale estimated nitrate concentration is obtained, as well as maps of the estimated county-l...

Conditions in Agricultural Headwater Streams

11 Whilst the processes involved in the cycling of dissolved phosphorus (P) in rivers have been 12 extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms controlling particulate P concentrations 13 during small and large flows. This deficiency is addressed through an analysis of large numbers of 14 suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under baseflow (n = 222) and storm event (n...
