Landscape Archaeology of Southern Mesopotamia: Identifying Features in the Dried Marshes

The landscape of the Mesopotamian floodplain is mainly structured by channel processes, including formation levees, meanders, scrollbars, oxbow lakes, crevasse splays, distributary channels, inter-distributary bays, and marshes. Moreover, several human-made features also form shape this landscape, such as canals, roads, trenches, farms, settlement sites ranging in size from villages to cities. A significant part covered marshes, especially southern region. These marshlands have thrived for thousands years are well known their sustainable biodiversity ecosystem. However, after deliberate draining marshes 1990s, areas become dry only small shallow water narrow strips vegetation remain. Several kinds archaeological appeared on surface can be clearly identified both ground surveys with use remote sensing tools. This paper aims determine type nature preserved that appear dried whether they different other elsewhere floodplain. An intensive survey was carried out a selected area marshland, resulting identification six types features: sites, rivers, grooves, roads (hollow ways). used bodies deep dense zones (reeds papyrus).
