Land sparing or sharing: Strategies for conservation of arable plant diversity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Strategies to achieve agricultural production and biodiversity conservation fall into two categories, land-sparing or land-sharing. Plant species richness under organic arable (land sharing) versus conventional with land set-aside for sparing) was evaluated on adjacent farms compare these strategies. Sampled plant significantly higher than arable, as expected, but very similar set-aside. Nevertheless, the Chao1 estimator of total indicated that larger area available plants may sustain more scarce leading a richness. It appears value sparing sharing depends relative portion spared (set-aside) compared shared (organic), not conventionally cropped land. Furthermore, in theory land-shared use will have greater capacity populations low-density simply due 100 % being species. These are an important principals assessing strategies seeking balance just all uses.

A comparison of land-sharing and land-sparing strategies for plant richness conservation in agricultural landscapes.
Strategies for conserving plant diversity in agroecosystems generally focus on either expanding land area in non-crop habitat or enhancing diversity within crop fields through changes in within-field management practices. In this study, we compare effects on landscape-scale species richness from such land-sharing or land-sparing strategies. We collected data in arable field, grassland, pasture,...
متن کاملReframing the land-sparing/land-sharing debate for biodiversity conservation.
Conservation biologists are devoting an increasing amount of energy to debating whether land sparing (high-yielding agriculture on a small land footprint) or land sharing (low-yielding, wildlife-friendly agriculture on a larger land footprint) will promote better outcomes for local and global biodiversity. In turn, concerns are mounting about how to feed the world, given increasing demands for ...
متن کاملUsing optimization methods to align food production and biodiversity conservation beyond land sharing and land sparing.
Aligning food production with biodiversity conservation is one of the greatest challenges of our time. One framing of this challenge is the land-sharing vs. land-sparing debate. Much empirical research has focused on identifying the relationship between agricultural yields and species populations, and using the relative number of species with particular relationships to inform landscape-level m...

Taxonomic bias in organismal research and conservation is well recognized, with focus disproportionately directed toward birds and mammals (1). Among mammals, carnivores often receive excessive attention and large carnivores are particularly well studied (2). Although papers reporting the population trends of a single species do not usually result in high-profile publications, an analysis of po...
