Laboratory Study of Turbulent Mass Exchange in a Stratified Fluid

In this study, a laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate quantitatively turbulent exchange between two quasi-homogeneous layers of equal thickness and different density (salinity), as well the fine structure transition zone (interface) layers. The fluid continuously stirred by system horizontally oscillating vertical rods, piercing through both producing vertically homogeneous impact in two-layered fluid. every experimental run, stirring process carried out from certain initial state up complete mixing buoyancy flux estimated using data on time changes salinity upper lower interface measured profiling conductivity microprobe. results were presented dimensionless form analyzed depending parameters follows: Richardson number, Ri, Reynolds Re. It found that if Ri>Ri∗Re where Ri∗ is critical exists “sharpening” mode “eroding” (diffusive) Ri<Ri∗Re. maximum efficiency achieved at when sharpening diffusive modes.
