Embracing Uncertainty in Large-Scale Computational Astrophysics
A revolution is underway in astronomy resulting from massive astrophysical surveys providing a panchromatic view of the night sky. The next generation of surveys and the simulations used to calibrate them can produce in two nights what the previous generation produced over many years. This enormous image acquisition capability allows the telescope to revisit areas of the sky with sufficient fre...

متن کاملAstronomy and Astrophysics Large Scale Dynamos with Ambipolar Diffusion Nonlinearity
It is shown that ambipolar diffusion as a toy nonlinearity leads to very similar behaviour of large scale turbulent dynamos as full MHD. This is demonstrated using both direct simulations in a periodic box and a closure model for the magnetic correlation functions applicable to infinite space. Large scale fields develop via a nonlocal inverse cascade as described by the alpha-effect. However, b...
متن کاملHigh - energy Nd : glass laser facility for collisionless laboratory astrophysics
A kilojoule-class laser (Raptor) has recently been activated at the Phoenix-laserfacility at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) for an experimental program on laboratory astrophysics in conjunction with the Large Plasma Device (LAPD). The unique combination of a high-energy laser system and the 18 meter long, highly-magnetized but current-free plasma will support a new class of pla...
متن کاملLaboratory Measurements in Nuclear Astrophysics
After reviewing some of the basic concepts, nomenclatures and parametrizations of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology, we introduce a few central problems in Nuclear Astrophysics, including the hot-CNO cycle, helium burning and solar neutrino’s. We demonstrate that Secondary (Radioactive) Nuclear Beams allow for considerable progress on these problems.
