Kinetic Modelling of Biodegradability Data of Commercial Polymers Obtained under Aerobic Composting Conditions

Methods to treat kinetic data for the biodegradation of different plastic materials are comparatively discussed. Different samples commercial formulates were tested aerobic in compost, following standard ISO14855. Starting from raw data, conversion vs. time entries elaborated using relatively simple models, such as integrated equations zero, first and second order, through Wilkinson model, or a Michaelis Menten approach, which was previously reported literature. The results validated against experimental allowed computation half degradation substrate and, by extrapolation, estimation final all tested. In particular, approach fails describing kinetics well zeroth- second-order kinetics. pattern one sample described detail first-order By contrast, other substrates followed more complex pathway, with rapid partial degradation, subsequently slowing.
