چکیده
Abstract The simulations of the monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) during Indian summer (ISM) are evaluated with 19 atmosphere–ocean coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) from phase 6 Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP6). focus is on northward propagation MISO. CMIP6 have great improvement in simulating mean rainfall, as 17 out can reasonably simulate rainfall. However, many fail to reproduce realistic patterns rainfall and MISO amplitude, particularly over land region. underestimation amplitude still a notable model bias CMIP6. Moreover, 9 cannot generate features, some even stationary pattern. Process diagnostics based seasonal vertical zonal wind shear, low-level moisture, vortex tilting also examined. Intraseasonal ‘‘monsoon jets’’ in the equatorial Indian Ocean
[1] The zonal wind in the equatorial Indian Ocean (EqIO) is westerly almost throughout the year. It has a strong semiannual cycle and drives the spring and fall Wyrtki jets. In addition, high resolution daily satellite winds show ‘‘westerly wind bursts’’ lasting 10–40 days, associated with atmospheric convection in the eastern EqIO. These bursts have the potential to produce intraseasonal eastw...
متن کاملInteractions between the summer mean monsoon and the intraseasonal oscillation in the Indian monsoon region
[1] The relationship between interannual variations of the seasonal mean monsoon and intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) during boreal summer over the Indian monsoon region is investigated. The result shows a negative correlation between all-India summer monsoon rainfall and the ISO intensity. It is argued that the negative correlation is primarily attributed to the impact of the mean state of Indi...
متن کاملStructures and mechanisms of the first-branch northward-propagating intraseasonal oscillation over the tropical Indian Ocean
The first-branch northward-propagating intraseasonal oscillation (FNISO) over the tropical Indian Ocean (IO) often triggers the onset of the Asian summer monsoon. In this study we investigate the structures and mechanisms associated with FNISO through the diagnosis of ERA-Interim reanalysis data for the period of 1990–2009. A composite analysis is conducted to reveal the structure and evolution...
متن کاملOcean–Atmosphere Coupling in the Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation: A Simple Model Study
A simple coupled model is used in a zonally symmetric aquaplanet configuration to investigate the effect of ocean–atmosphere coupling on the Asian monsoon intraseasonal oscillation. The model consists of a linear atmospheric model of intermediate complexity based on quasi-equilibrium theory coupled to a simple, linear model of the upper ocean. This model has one unstable eigenmode with a period...
متن کاملObjective Identification of Nonlinear Convectively Coupled Phases of Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation: Implications for Prediction
The nonlinear convectively coupled character of the summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) that manifests in its event-to-event variations is a major hurdle for skillful extended-range prediction of the active/break episodes. The convectively coupled character of the monsoon ISO implies that a particular nonlinear phase of the precipitation ISO is linked to a unique pattern of the large...
