Ketogenic diet in childhood epilepsy: clinical algorithm in a tertiary care center

چکیده
Background Dietary therapies play a crucial role in managing patients, especially those who have specific types of epilepsy, display adverse effects, or are not responding to pharmacological treatments. The ketogenic diet (KD) is high-fat, restricted carbohydrate, and adequate protein regimen. KD has proven be an effective nonpharmacological treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) by generating ketones that act as alternative fuel source the brain, thereby reducing occurrence seizures. advantages been attributed its universal availability, numerous administration techniques, affordability. Objective This article presents algorithm developed multidisciplinary team experts at Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University, Egypt. serves guide implementing DRE children. previously validated through study. Methods consists seven essential stages: (1) referral patients Complex Epilepsy Committee, (2) pre-diet assessment (3) Clinical Nutrition (CN) team, (4) selection initiation, (5) seizure follow-up fine-tuning, (6) reassessment after 3 months, (7) evaluation journey 24 months. Results was systematically proved highly influential facilitating implementation KD. yielded significant health benefits pediatric patients. Conclusion provides systematic approach demonstrated positive outcomes

Childhood Autoimmune Hepatitis in Bahrain: a Tertiary Center Experience
Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in childhood has variable modes of presentation, and the disease should be suspected and excluded in all children presenting with symptoms and signs of prolonged or severe acute liver disease. In AIH, the liver biopsy histopathology shows inflammation in addition to presence of serum autoimmune antibodies and increased levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG). Ob...
متن کاملKetogenic diet in the management of childhood epilepsy.
The ketogenic diet has been used for the treatment of epilepsy in children for almost 100 years. Originally, it was determined that individuals with seizures found benefit from starvation; subsequently a diet was proposed which was high in fat content, the breakdown of fat for energy producing ketones and therefore mimicking starvation(1). This was subsequently found to be effective in treating...
متن کاملEfficiency of the ketogenic diet: treatment of refractory childhood epilepsy
This review reports on the past, current and potential future developments in aspects of the ketogenic diet in epilepsy treatment for children who have refractory epilepsy (uncontrolled seizures after having tried at least two anti-epileptic drugs). The ketogenic diet is based on putting the body into ketosis, so that is uses ketones rather than glucose for the energy in the brain. The diet com...
متن کاملChildhood Absence Epilepsy Successfully Treated with the Paleolithic Ketogenic Diet
INTRODUCTION Childhood absence epilepsy is an epilepsy syndrome responding relatively well to the ketogenic diet with one-third of patients becoming seizure-free. Less restrictive variants of the classical ketogenic diet, however, have been shown to confer similar benefits. Beneficial effects of high fat, low-carbohydrate diets are often explained in evolutionary terms. However, the paleolithic...
