Karst aquifers and water resource contamination in Haiti

چکیده

Abstract Shallow alluvial and karst aquifers widespread inadequate sanitation practices combine to impact water resources in Haiti. The vulnerability of is complicated by complex cultural, ecological, geological, hydrological, hydrogeological considerations. Roughly 84% the rocks exposed Haiti consist calcareous alluvium. These lithologies serve as an efficient reservoir transport mechanism for water-borne pathogens, which negatively health many Haitians. Data from 9,837 points indicate that 75% sources Centre, 55% Nord (North), 12% Ouest (West) departments are considered unsafe or high risk based on World Health Organization standards. Inadequate and, some cases, improper siting installation pit latrines contribute poor quality. Numerous safe-water intervention technologies exist effective at removing pathogens contaminate sources; however, Haitians lack means obtain these solutions. Future regional precipitation climate trends will have important implications selecting appropriate interventions. Additional efforts collect compile quality data needed better understand country-wide contamination patterns.

Karst springs hydrographs as indicators of karst aquifers

By analysing the hydrographs of karst springs it is possible to identify aquifer characteristics and, accordingly, the main features of a karst rock-fissure massif. Consequently, relevant data can be obtained by analysing hydrograph recession curves. This paper presents a detailed analysis and explanation of numerous cases of break points on recession curves via various values of the recession ...

Factors Affecting Public-Supply Well Vulnerability in Two Karst Aquifers

Karst aquifers occur in a range of climatic and geologic settings. Nonetheless, they are commonly characterized by their vulnerability to water-quality impairment. Two karst aquifers, the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas and the Upper Floridan aquifer in western Florida, were investigated to assess factors that control the movement of contaminants to public-supply wells (PSWs). The geoche...

Contamination and restoration of groundwater aquifers.

Humans are exposed to chemicals in contaminated groundwaters that are used as sources of drinking water. Chemicals contaminate groundwater resources as a result of waste disposal methods for toxic chemicals, overuse of agricultural chemicals, and leakage of chemicals into the subsurface from buried tanks used to hold fluid chemicals and fuels. In the process, both the solid portions of the subs...

Karst Aquifer Recharge: Comments on Somaratne, N. Characteristics of Point Recharge in Karst Aquifers.

The article “Characteristics of Point Recharge in Karst Aquifers, Water 6: 2782–2807” by N. Somaratne evaluates various recharge estimation techniques applied to four limestone aquifers in South Australia. Somaratne [1] concludes that methods based on watertable fluctuations, groundwater modelling and water budgets are independent of recharge processes, and are therefore superior to the chlorid...

Karst aquifers on small islands--the island of Olib, Croatia.

Water supply is a major problem in the Adriatic islands, especially during the summer tourism season, and represents a limiting factor to the islands' further economic development. Much attention has been given to water supply solutions, primarily in terms of attempting to use the existing island water. Unfortunately, few islands have favourable hydrological conditions to accumulate significant...
