Fine structural aspects on auditory hair cell degeneration in the budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus, as induced by kanamycin.
The effects of kanamycin, an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group, on the auditory sensory epithelium of the budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus, were examined using both scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Results show that the threshold of the auditory brainstem response increased in birds treated with kanamycin 200 mg/kg for 49 days. While the auditory sensory epithelium of the...

In view of the theory that alpha-lipoic acid effectively prevents cochlear cells from injury caused by various factors such as cisplatin and noise, this study examined whether alpha-lipoic acid can prevent kanamycin-induced ototoxicity. To this end, healthy BALB/c mice were injected subcutaneously with alpha-lipoic acid and kanamycin for 14 days. Auditory brainstem response test showed that inc...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether regenerated hair cells in the basilar papilla of chickens are resistant to kanamycin monosulfate damage. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. SUBJECTS Ninety newly hatched Roman chickens. INTERVENTION Chickens were injected with kanamycin monosulfate (200 mg/kg/d) for 10, 13, 17, 20, 25, or 30 days. RESULTS Scanning electron microscopy revealed that hair ce...
متن کاملProphylaxis of kanamycin-induced ototoxicity by a radioprotectant.
S-2 (3-aminopropylamino)ethylphosphorothioate ameliorates hearing losses due to ototoxic doses of kanamycin sulfate in the guinea pig when administered one hour before the antibiotic. Since this radioprotectant is believed to operate as a free-radical scavenger, kanamycin ototoxicity may involve free radicals.
